The successful incumbent will report directly to the Harvesting Manager.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be in possession of a Matric Certificate/Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role within a forestry environment.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification would be an advantage.
  • Must be able to speak and communicate effectively in Xhosa.
  • Should be able to promote effective team spirit by good leadership.
  • Must be organized and systematic in the performance of duties.
  • Must use initiative and be able to find novel ways to deal with challenges.
  • Should have good interpersonal and communications skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Supervise production staff under your supervision and ensure that they adhere to production procedures and that production targets are achieved.
  • Record daily production performance schedule and report to the relevant people.
  • Supervise the use of company property and equipment under your control.
    • Ensure that all equipment have logbooks and checklists and that these are completed as per the company standard.
  • Ensure the timely maintenance of company equipment under your control.
  • Quality control:
    • Ensure the correct log lengths optimisation is achieved.
    • Ensure that the correct colour code and numbering system is used.
    • Ensure correct processing is done for each log.
  • Assist in production procedures when required, i.e.: log marking, operating machines, etc.
  • Accurate completion of staff time sheets on a weekly basis.
  • Apply corrective disciplinary procedures, fairly and in a progressive manner
  • Monitor and report buffer stock every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning before 9am.
  • Monitor the age of timber stacks and report if timber is 3 weeks or older.
  • Ensure that all safety standards and procedures are adhered to by the team under your supervision.
  • Operate machinery when required.
  • Ensure back-up operators are trained and ready at all times.
  • Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting and training employees, developing personal growth opportunities.
  • Ensure operators and safety personnel are certified at all times.

Job Purpose
The Technical manager oversees the upkeep and maintenance of the company’s equipment and facilities, including company accommodation.

Requirements

  • Valid grade 12 qualification (or equivalent) with proof thereof required;
  • Formal Electrical and/or Mechanical Trade Test certification and/or Diploma / Degree in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering (NQF Level 7) and/or Equivalent;
  • Fluency in English required (Reading, writing & speaking) (Fluency in additional official language/s advantageous);
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required (Excel, Outlook and Word);
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years’ relevant experience Engineering Foreman or similar Position with contactable references (experience in a Sawmill/similar environment);
  • Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa advantageous;
  • Membership of the South African Engineering Association advantageous
  • Sound knowledge of and technical aptitude for sawmilling and timber value-adding equipment and machinery;
  • Sound knowledge of relevant safety legislation and systems (Safety & Risk Management Course advantageous);

Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead and control all aspects of a maintenance team of 20-30 employees, including Artisans, Semi-skilled employees and artisan assistants;
  • Maintain and improve current maintenance systems (Strong on preventative maintenance) to assure target up-time is achieved;
  • Ability to carry out Planner functions, scheduling of and ensuring that PMs are done correctly, thoroughly and on right schedule;
  • Constantly explore equipment/machines and find ways to improve safety and efficiency;
  • The role is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of plans to manage all Engineering Assets, Resources and Infrastructure – availability of machinery/equipment as well as managing resources and people to assist in achieving planned production targets.
  • Maintain and manage Mechanical Systems and Electrical Reticulation Systems (including company accommodation, solar and hydro);
  • The role oversees the manufacturing, constructing, assembling and fitting of components by his/her technical team for machinery, vehicles, installations and other apparatus or articles and is also responsible to ensure proper maintenance and repair of such equipment (both preventative and reactive maintenance);
  • The Technical manager should direct and coordinate the activities of his/her team, ensure their skills remain up to standard, they have a future skills development plan, they stay motivated, their performances are continuously evaluated (with necessary actions where required) and that his/her team works safely and productively at both the mill and surrounding areas, which includes the company accommodation and other areas of responsibility.

Job description:
Duties as a Power Station Shiftman include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensure that fuel feeding system functions properly;
  • Attending to the conveyors and sawdust bins;
  • Ensure that steam supply is maintained at the correct pressure at all times;
  • Ensure that all mechanical and electrical equipment, turbines and boilers are in good working order and safe to operate;
  • Ensure that proper levels of chemicals are maintained in the boiler and cooling tower dosing units;
  • Ensure proper functioning of boiler and cooling tower dosing systems;
  • Ensure proper supply and treatment of drinking water (mixing of chemicals);
  • Ensure proper functioning of boilers at all times;
  • Ensure proper functioning of the turbines to provide and maintain continuous supply of power;
  • General Management of employees at the power station to ensure compliance with the company standards, rules and policies;
  • Ensure strict compliance with Health and Safety rules and regulations;
  • Ensure that all firefighting (including fire pumps) and other safety equipment are in good and proper working order;
  • Attend to basic maintenance and repairs of power station equipment and machinery;
  • Manage waste material; and
  • Ensure proper housekeeping.

In addition to Power Station operations, you will be required to perform maintenance and repairs on machines and equipment.  These duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Installation, maintenance, manufacturing and repair of sawmill and power station equipment, motors, gear boxes, machinery, tools, conveyor systems, control systems, kilns, buildings, vehicles, trailers, pumps, water (reticulation) and sprinkler systems;
  • Setting of frame saws and machines;
  • Replacement of blades;
  • Fit grinding wheels and stones;
  • General welding, cutting and grinding work;
  • Attend to fault finding, maintenance, re-setting and repairs of hydraulic and pneumatic systems;
  • Turning and milling of spare parts;
  • Ensure strict compliance with health and safety standards and requirements in the workplace;
  • General maintenance of firefighting equipment and assist in fire prevention;
  • General maintenance and repairs of company assets, including buildings, houses, vehicles and/or any other property the company is liable to maintain;
  • Attend to or assist in the training of employees.

Minimum requirements:

  • South African citizen.
  • Qualified as a Fitter and Turner, Fitter or Electrician.
  • Practical experience in a sawmill or power station environment will be advantageous.
  • Prepared to work shifts and on weekends, willingness to learn and the ability to work and take rational decisions under pressure.
  • On the job training will be provided to the successful candidate.
  • Remuneration will be based on skills and experience and will include membership to a retirement fund as well as company housing.

 MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Matric / NTC 3.
  • Completed trade test as Fitter (and Turner, would be advantageous) with Red Seal Experience in the servicing and installation of:
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic equipment;
    • Conveyors;
    • Gear boxes; and
    • Belt and chain drives.
  • Experienced in Sawmill related equipment, would be advantageous:
    • Frame saws, bandsaws and associated equipment;
    • Drum chippers;
    • Debarkers;
    • Planers
    • Finger jointer machine
    • Destacker
    • Boilers
    • Kilns
  • Proven experience as a welder.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment. Sawmilling experience would be an advantage.
  • Experience in machine setup.

  • Willing to work irregular hours and perform standby duties.
  • Regularly working overtime, especially on weekends.

  • Cost-effective installation of new plant and machinery.
