Fitter – Kubusi Sawmill

The successful incumbent will report to the Maintenance Manager.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Matric / NTC 3.
  • Completed trade test as Fitter (and Turner, would be advantageous) with Red Seal Experience in the servicing and installation of:
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic equipment;
    • Conveyors;
    • Gear boxes; and
    • Belt and chain drives.
  • Experienced in Sawmill related equipment, would be advantageous:
    • Frame saws, bandsaws and associated equipment;
    • Drum chippers;
    • Debarkers;
    • Planers
    • Finger jointer machine
    • Destacker
    • Boilers
    • Kilns
  • Proven experience as a welder.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment. Sawmilling experience would be an advantage.
  • Experience in machine setup.
  • Medically fit with sober habits.
  • Code EB license with own transport.
  • Willing to work irregular hours and perform standby duties.
  • Regularly working overtime, especially on weekends.
  • Must be able to communicate in English (speak, read & write).
  • Ability to communicate in Xhosa will be an added advantage.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Perform cost-effective mechanical maintenance and repairs on all plant and ancillary equipment in the department.
  • Cost-effective installation of new plant and machinery.
  • Recording of all work performed on plant and ancillary equipment on a time sheet and worksheet.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of all mechanical plant and ancillary equipment on site.
  • Maintain a high level of housekeeping and total compliance with safety standards within his work area.
  • Performing of overtime work and standby duties as and when required.
  • Assisting with on-the-job training of apprentices and semi-skilled artisans working in the engineering division.
  • Requisitioning of spares and materials.
  • Assist in the formulation and implementation of a planned maintenance program.
  • Be able to record faults, add to planned work list and plan execution of work.

Managing Forester (HOD)

Diggersrest Timber Company situated in Tzaneen, Limpopo, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Managing Forester to Head the Department (HOD) and oversee all aspects of our forestry management and timber plantations. The Head Forester will play a critical role in ensuring sustainable forest practices, maximizing timber yield, and managing a team of foresters and contractors. This role requires someone with strong leadership, technical expertise in forestry (especially in eucalyptus) and a commitment to environmental stewardship.

Key Functions as Managing Forester:

Forest Management

  • Develop and implement sustainable forest management plans.
  • Oversee operations including planting, thinning, pruning, harvesting, and regeneration.
  • Monitor forest health, including pest and disease control, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Optimize forest growth and yield while maintaining biodiversity and ecological integrity.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of foresters, technicians, and forestry workers.
  • Coordinate training and development programs for the forestry team to enhance operational efficiency.

Operational Planning & Logistics

  • Plan and manage timber harvesting schedules with a focus on environmental impact minimization.
  • Oversee logistics related to timber extraction, transportation, and delivery.
  • Collaborate with contractors, suppliers, and key stakeholders to ensure efficient operations.

Sustainability & Compliance

  • Ensure all forestry activities comply with local, national, and international environmental and safety standards.
  • Implement and monitor sustainable forestry practices.
  • Maintain certifications such as FSC and PEFC, ensuring adherence to industry standards.

Budgeting & Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the annual forestry budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Monitor and report on financial performance, ensuring profitability without compromising sustainability.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders, government agencies, environmental  organizations, and customers.
  • Ensure Diggersrest has a positive social and environmental impact in the region.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry (or equivalent qualification).
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in forestry management, including at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Fire protection experience with a minimum Fire Boss Level 2 qualification.
  • In-depth knowledge of forest planning, silviculture, and timber harvesting practices.
  • Strong leadership, team-building, and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Sound understanding of environmental legislation and forest certification systems (FSC, PEFC).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • High proficiency in Microforest.
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be in excellent health and physically fit to work in a demanding environment.

Introduction

  • A long-established company in the Sawmill Industry has a vacancy for a Maintenance Fitter.
  • The ideal candidate will have had several years of experience as Fitter and that is on the lookout for a long-term employment opportunity.
  • Although not mandatory any knowledge of electrical and PLC’s will be hugely beneficial

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To do maintenance and breakdown repairs on all mechanical Equipment.
  • To perform inline inspections and maintenance.
  • To perform plant shutdown work.
  • To perform upgrading of equipment and maintaining machinery.
  • Repair broken or defective machine parts, using welding and brazing tools.
  • Must work in full compliance with the approved safety regulations.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting techniques to solve machine issues.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all machines by daily inspection of equipment and structures to identify errors and defects on same and correct them.
  • Ordering and maintaining critical parts inventory and supplies for facility and manufacturing equipment, by using a stores requisition with sequential job card numbers.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work over weekends and after hours when the mill is off.

Minimum Requirements

  • Red seal qualification as Fitter
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Fitter or equivalent experience in the sawmilling industry
  • Any knowledge of electrical and PLC’s will be hugely beneficial
  • Own transport and drivers licence essential. Must be willing to travel or live in accommodation onsite
  • Candidates with Zulu/Swazi language proficiency will be preferred

  • Management of stock systems and controls, reconciliations on accounts, assets and assistance with 3rd party audits

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring effective management of stock and stock systems over all the sites

  • Fixed asset registers and insurance

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Accounting or related qualification (completed or working to completion)
  • Completed articles or proven record of financial experience
  • High proficiency level in MS Office suite especially in Excel
  • Fluent conversant in English and Afrikaans
  • Attention to details
  • Working knowledge of Sage evolution or Sage pastel would be advantageous
