DENSA SAW MILLS – PRODUCTION MANAGER (WITH FOCUS ON DRY MILL)

Job Purpose

Liaison between internal and external stakeholders in the Dry Mill process, including production personnel, sales personnel and outbound transport companies;

Manages the Dry Mill production control and logistic activities at the lowest cost with the best service.

Reporting Line

This position has direct reporting to Densa Mill Manager & Indirect reporting to the Group Sales Manager and Operations Director on transport as well as product & business development (*dotted line to Mill HODs);

The Dry Mill Manager, Despatch Foreman & Destacking Foreman positions report to this position.

Requirements

  • Valid grade 12 qualification with proof thereof required;
  • Fluency in English required (Reading, writing & speaking) (Fluency in Afrikaans and additional official language/s advantageous);
  • BTech(Wood Tech)/National Diploma(Wood Technology)/BSc(Wood Technology)/proven equivalent qualification;
  • Good knowledge of quality / SANS Standards / relevant SANS grading specifications;
  • Minimum 5-10 years’ experience in sawmill dry mill production environment with contactable references;
  • Advanced knowledge & Proficiency of Microsoft Office required (Excel, Outlook and Word);
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, Strong mental ability with deep Analytical, Problem-solving, and Decision-making skills, effective Interpersonal & communication skills, self-driven and ready to interact with all levels in the organization.

Responsibilities  (including, but not limited to)

  • Manage the Densa Dry Mill from Destacking Section through to Despatch to ensure production/productivity targets are met (this includes Finger-joint and Planer operations under Dry Mill Manager);
  • Manage the Despatch loading plan to ensure that volumes are on/above plan & loads are scheduled in a cost-effective manner;
  • Interact/advise with Dry Mill Manager (& Wet Mill Manager as needed) on production planning to ensure that loading schedule is successfully implemented (this includes optimising value whereby the ratio of S5 & better is on/above plan);
  • Interact with Sales Office to ensure that customer commitments, preferences, approved credit status, etc are complied with;
  • Interact with all role players (including production HODs) to maximise value and volume recovery throughout the Dry Mill production process (improve productivities at the various machines / processes);
  • Interact with Maintenance Manager & Responsible Dry Mill Fitter to ensure that all PM schedules are applied/up to date;
  • Involved in co-ordinating all other maintenance work both planned & unplanned to ensure that machine uptime is maximised & complying with accepted standards;
  • Ensure effective planning of the Dry Mill in line with production orders to meet monthly targets, company goals & objectives;
  • Manage operating / transport expenditures to be within budget (especially with focus on labour- as well as R&M costs);
  • Be involved in product and business development opportunities as well as capex projects as required to enhance business development, ensure sustainability and customer satisfaction;
  • Encourage & foster a sense of high, positive morale with colleagues & suppliers while carrying out the above functions;
  • Long term planning to supervision of Day-to-day activities and implement necessary improvement actions in coordination with other mill functions – Keep track of a.o. quality, quantity, stock levels, delivery times, transport costs and efficiency;
  • Assist in efficient management of Dry Mill production planning, and logistics to drive production efficiency whilst maintaining delivery performance at optimal stock levels (Advanced Production/Planning/Production processes knowledge);
  • Ensure effective communication of relevant information to all stakeholders to support effective decision making for the business;
  • Package market related and negotiable.

THE FOLLOWING EX VACANCY EXISTS IN THE SAWMILLING INDUSTRY IN MPUMALANGA:

Minimum Qualifications and Experience required:

  • Proven Grade 12 school qualification or equivalent advantageous;
  • BTech (Wood Tech) / National Diploma (Wood Technology) qualification / BSc (Wood Technology) / proven equivalent qualification (similar qualification e.g. Supervisor’s Certificate and Relevant “on-the-job” training/experience beneficial);
  • At least ±2-5 years’ proven experience in Sawmill production environment in a management position with contactable references (dry mill experience/knowledge required) (reference checks will be done);
  • Fluency in English as official business language (reading / writing / speaking) (additional language/s advantageous);
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook and Word);
  • Must be prepared to work shifts and/or overtime;
  • Strong Managerial skills are essential – strong people management skills as well as good personal relations – ability to not only interact well with Heads of Departments,  but also with subordinates reporting directly or indirectly to the Dry Mill Manager;
  • Good communication and interpretative skills;
  • Good knowledge of wood drying practices and controls;
  • Knowledge of SANS Standards Advantageous (Structural Board Grading);
  • Knowledge of OHS Act;
  • Good Knowledge and experience of saw milling equipment;
  • Ability to work overtime   Experience working in high pressure and the production environment.

Job Description/Purpose, Responsibilities and Requirements:

  • Overall management of the functions of the Dry Mill (Establishing and monitoring overall performance for production and quality standards in the Dry Mill and ensuring monthly targets are met) (i.e. including, but not limited to, production activities, staff requirements and cost control of a.o. Destacking, Recovery, Dry Mill, Finger-Joint and Despatch sections);
  • Planning, coordination and control of production processes in the Dry Mill Sections – Ensuring the products are produced efficiently at the right costs and level of quality;
  • Controlling and minimizing of overall operating expenditures, manpower, wages and salaries of all workers in the Dry Mill;
  • Market mix management;
  • Deciding on how best to use mill’s workforce and equipment to meet production goals;
  • Providing continuous improvement activities to maximize productivity and manufacturing efficiency by actively searching for improvements in the manufacturing process to improve cycle time;
  • Exposure to Planned Maintenance Systems beneficial;
  • Ensuring that plant, equipment, yard and buildings are managed / maintained in a planned and cost-effective way;
  • Maintaining and improving of existing dry mill facilities and equipment;  replacing, or making adjustments to plant facilities and equipment when and where necessary;
  • Ensuring proper storage, handling, and processing of material to reduce defects and increase yield;
  • Ensure quality control measures are met, e.g. graders are grading accurately and sampling is done on the structural dimensions of the lumber processed;
  • Identifying and resolving issues and notifying management of issues and causes when identified;
  • Ensures that daily production figures/downtimes etcetera are captured/submitted to the relative administration staff;
  • Do stock takes when required;
  • Assist in maintaining sound industrial relations with subordinates, peers and superiors;
  • Providing direction, development and leadership to relevant Assistant Managers and/or Foremen to accomplish the company goals and objectives;
  • Encouraging and fostering a sense of high, positive morale among the workforce;
  • Ensuring a good IR climate in section by ensuring feedback on HR issues and submitting completed documentation to the HR department as required;
  • Performing all administrative duties pertaining to the position (including, but not limited to, reports on maintenance, costs, accidents, accident investigations, performance, training, environment, etcetera);
  • Assist in adhering and enforcing all safety rules and regulations as stipulated by company procedures and relevant legislation;

FJ Foreman (WRSM)

(Please note this foreman position is a SAWMILLING SPECIFIC junior position at supervisory level, and is NOT aimed at candidates who are artisans / engineering foremen / mining foremen)

Minimum Qualifications and Experience required:

  • Proof of grade 12 school- and other qualification/s required;
  • Supervisor’s certificate/Saw milling certificate/similar qualification/s e.g. Diploma in Wood Technology and/or relevant “on-the-job” training beneficial (NQF Level 3 and above);
  • Proven saw milling experience in the Dry Mill (especially at Finger-Joint) with references essential (minimum 3 years’ experience and 2 years’ supervisory experience);
  • Fluent in English as official business language (additional languages advantageous);
  • Knowledge of OHS Act.

  • Good knowledge of SANS Standards (10096  and Structural Board Grading (Finger-Joint Grading)) advantageous (proven training beneficial);
  • Experience in ensuring quality control measures are met and managed, preparation and passing of external quality control audits;

  • Good knowledge of sample taking principles;
  • Grading as well as planer and finger-jointing exposure advantageous;

  • Section 13 Trade Certificate (Completion of N3/N4 minimum);
  • At least 5 years’ proven saw-mill experience (with contactable references);
  • Sawmilling Experience (including Wet Mill, Dry Mill, Kilns&Boilers and all sections’ related equipment);

  • Fluent in English as official business language (read, write, speak) (additional languages advantageous).

Job Description, Duties and Requirements:

  • Knowledge of sawmilling equipment;
  • Strong on preventative maintenance;
  • Experience on identification and sourcing of spares;
  • Welding and machining skills required (including working on lathe and milling machines, as well as pneumatic and hydraulic experience);
  • Taking accurate measurements of metal components, ensuring a proper fit;
  • Lubricating, measuring, tapping, drilling and polishing components to prepare them for assembly;
  • Cutting, bending and affixing equipment such as hydraulic pipelines and welding metal components together as required;
  • Proposing procurement of spares for scheduled and corrective maintenance;
  • Proposing modifications to schedules for more effective care of assets;
  • Attending to breakdowns as requested by relevant staff members as per procedure;
  • Inspecting damaged component parts, identifying the deficient components and reassembling it to good working order where possible;
  • Completing & handing in job cards subsequently to completing tasks & Ensuring Planned Maintenance sheets are completed;
  • Adhering to all safety rules and regulations;
  • Reporting any deviation from standard safety practice immediately;
  • Proposing changes to achieve greater safety and/or productivity of the operation and maintenance functions;
  • Maintaining good housekeeping by keeping work area clean and organised;
  • Self-starter with Good problem-solving skills / Fault finding ability;
  • Ability to function as part of the Team / Team-player and the ability to successfully manage all facets of the team reporting to him/her;
  • Medically fit for the position;
  • Proven experience in high pressure, production environment/s;
  • Required to work shifts and overtime from time to time (including occasional call-outs and regular stand-by duties);
  • Partake in weekly emergency and/or mechanical standby;
  • Required to work in December during Annual Shutdown.
