Managing Forester (Head of Department)

Diggersrest Timber Company situated in Tzaneen, Limpopo, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Managing Forester to be the Head of Department (HOD) and oversee all aspects of our forest management and timber production. The Head Forester will play a critical role in ensuring sustainable forest practices, maximizing timber yield, and managing a team of foresters and support staff.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement forest management plans to ensure sustainable use of forest resources.
  • Manage all aspects of silviculture, harvesting and protection.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of foresters, technicians, and forestry workers.
  • Develop, plan and coordinate the Annual Plan of Operations (APO)
  • Manage the logistics of timber extraction, transportation, and delivery.
  • Work closely with contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders to ensure the smooth execution of forestry operations.
  • Maintain legal compliance and PEFC certifications.
  • Develop and manage budgeting, ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Liaise with community stakeholders, government agencies and customers.
  • Foster good relationships with local communities, ensuring a positive impact on social and environmental aspects of the region.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry. A Master’s degree in Forestry is an advantage.
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in forestry management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Vast fire protection experience with at least a Fire Boss level 2 qualification.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
  • Knowledge of environmental laws, forest certification standards (FSC / PEFC), and sustainable forest management practices.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with different stakeholders.
  • Extensive knowledge of MicroForest (proficient in both BS & PM) and GIS mapping.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Remuneration: Highly competitive and negotiable dependent on expertise and experience. Housing, vehicle and operational equipment provided.

Silviculture Forester (Diggersrest Timber Company)

Silviculture Forester

Diggersrest Timber Company situated in Tzaneen, Limpopo, is seeking an experienced Forester to manage and oversee our silviculture operations. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring the health and productivity of our plantations through sustainable practices, forest regeneration, and ongoing care of plantation resources.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare land and manage re-establishment (planting & coppice regeneration) to meet targets within budget and according to standards.
  • Manage and inspect full silviculture operations to ensure compliance with service level agreements, legislation and standards.
  • Identify all fire risks and implement measures to reduce such risks.
  • Ensure fire readiness, equipment serviceability, and contractor compliance with safety standards.
  • Implement the Annual Plan of Operations for both commercial and open areas, and ensure operations comply with standards and service level agreements.
  • Audit and sign off contractors completed work orders.
  • Manage enumeration teams.
  • Maintain company assets and foster strong relationships with communities, stakeholders, and contractors.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • National Diploma in Forestry.
  • Fire protection experience with at least a Fire Boss level 2 qualification.
  • Proven 5+ years’ relevant experience with solid references.
  • Strong understanding of forest management practices, reforestation techniques, and sustainability principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving and project management skills.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and traverse rugged terrain.
  • Knowledge of Microforest and GIS mapping software is an advantage.
  • Valid driver’s license.
