Busby Sawmills, a dynamic medium-sized sawmilling operation situated midway between Ermelo and Mkhondo, requires the services of a results-driven and hands-on Wet Mill Manager to oversee and optimise all wet mill production activities within the operation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for achieving production throughput targets, maximising log recovery, maintaining product quality standards and ensuring safe, efficient and cost-effective wet mill operations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant qualification in Wood Technology, Timber Processing, Production Management or related field advantageous
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a sawmilling production environment
  • Proven experience managing wet mill operations and production teams
  • Strong understanding of log breakdown optimisation, recovery rates and sawing systems
  • Sound mechanical and operational troubleshooting ability
  • Computer literacy and production reporting experience essential

Key Responsibilities & KPI’s

  • Manage and optimise all wet mill production processes and personnel
  • Achieve production throughput, recovery and efficiency targets
  • Minimise downtime, bottlenecks and operational losses
  • Monitor log conversion efficiency and lumber recovery percentages
  • Ensure compliance with grading and product quality specifications
  • Coordinate production flow between log yard, wet mill and downstream operations
  • Drive preventative maintenance coordination with engineering departments
  • Maintain strict housekeeping, safety and legal compliance standards
  • Manage shift performance, labour productivity and operator accountability
  • Monitor saw performance, alignment, cutting accuracy and equipment utilisation
  • Ensure optimal log presentation, breakdown accuracy and material flow
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to improve yield and operational efficiencies

Busby Sawmills, a dynamic medium-sized sawmilling operation, requires the services of a driven and hands-on Engineering / Maintenance Manager to lead and manage all engineering, maintenance and mechanical operations within the business.

The successful candidate will be operationally focused, technically competent and capable of driving high equipment reliability, plant availability and engineering compliance standards in a demanding production environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • N6 Mechanical Engineering
  • BTech / BEng Mechanical Engineering advantageous
  • Minimum 10 years engineering and maintenance management experience in a heavy industrial environment
  • Sawmilling, forestry, timber processing or manufacturing experience advantageous
  • Strong leadership and team management ability
  • Excellent fault-finding, planning and operational skills
  • Computer literacy and maintenance system experience essential

Key Responsibilities & KPI’s

  • Implement, manage and continuously improve a preventative maintenance program
  • Ensure maximum plant uptime, equipment reliability and production support
  • Manage maintenance budgets, spares and engineering costs effectively
  • Lead maintenance teams, contractors and workshop operations
  • Drive engineering housekeeping, safety and legal compliance standards
  • Reduce downtime and improve operational efficiencies
  • Oversee boilers, pressure vessels, conveyors, saw lines, mobile equipment and related plant infrastructure
  • Ensure legal engineering compliance in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Accept full accountability and compliance responsibilities as the GMR 2.1 appointee
  • Drive root cause failure analysis and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Develop maintenance schedules, shutdown planning and asset life strategies
