We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to lead and manage all Environmental, Health and Safety functions within our company. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring legal compliance, promoting a proactive safety culture, protecting the environment, maintaining certification standards, and driving continuous improvement throughout the organisation.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve the company’s Environmental, Health and Safety Management Systems.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable Environmental, Health and Safety legislation, regulations, permits, licences, and company standards.
- Lead and coordinate environmental and safety audits, inspections, risk assessments, and compliance evaluations.
- Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, environmental incidents and near misses, ensuring root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
- Monitor compliance with safe work procedures and ensure that appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is used.
- Oversee emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire prevention, evacuation procedures, and emergency drills.
- Manage environmental compliance relating to waste management, emissions, water use, hazardous substances, pollution prevention, and rehabilitation where applicable.
- Liaise with and manage regulatory authorities, auditors, certification bodies, and external stakeholders during inspections and audits.
- Manage and maintain accurate Environmental, Health and Safety records, registers, reports, statistics, and legal documentation.
- Monitor contractor compliance with company Environmental, Health and Safety requirements.
- Provide weekly, monthly and yearly Environmental, Health and Safety performance reports to management, including trends, KPIs, and recommendations.
- Promote a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement throughout the organisation.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, NOSA or equivalent Health & Safety qualification is not negotiable.
- National Diploma or Degree in Environmental Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Safety Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an Environmental Health & Safety management role within forestry, manufacturing, timber, agricultural or heavy industrial operations.
- Experience managing legal compliance audits and certification audits will be advantageous.
- Thorough knowledge of South African Occupational Health and Safety legislation, environmental legislation, and related regulations.
- National Environmental Management: Knowledge of Air Quality Act (NEM:AQA), including familiarity with atmospheric emission licensing (AEL) which will be highly advantageous.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel between company operations.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.
- Strong leadership, communication, report writing and organisational skills.
